Slider—Ambient Excursions for Pedal Steel Guitar is my first solo album. It was initially commissioned and released by Hearts of Space Records in 2000; the CD cover for this release looked like this:

I don’t know if I would have made this album without the encouragement and guidance of Hearts of Space Records president and owner, Stephen Hill. I owe him a debt of gratitude for his faith in me and for the sharp focus he required from me in terms of stylistic content. Left to my own devices, my musical interests are kind of all over the map and as such, much more difficult to describe and/or market. Sadly, soon after the album was released, Hearts of Space sold its catalog to a different record company that was neither interested in promoting Slider nor me, but at the same time wasn’t interested in releasing me from my contract. Five years later, we finally came to the agreement that I was free to go, and I was able to walk with the rights to Slider. In 2005, I re-released the album on my own newly-created label, Wiggling Air Records. Contractually whereas I owned the recordings, I didn’t own the original album artwork, so I re-released the exact same audio with new graphic artwork. From 2005, the album artwork looked like this:

With advances in technology—with higher and higher resolution streaming evolving, in 2022, I decided to have Slider remastered by my go-to, favorite mastering engineer, David Glasser of Airshow Mastering in Boulder, CO. I’ve been relying on David’s ears and skill for two decades—he totally “gets” my engineering—everything that passes from my hands through his sounds better to me after he does his magic. Whereas the original version of the album will continue to remain available both on CD and through streaming and downloads, the new remastered version won’t be released in a physical format such as CD or vinyl; it will only be available through either streaming or downloading. The new, remastered version will include the words “2022 Remaster” in each song title and will be accompanied by this updated graphic, and in my humble opinion, David brought out a warmth, clarity, and transparency that is really refreshing:"

Hybrid is my 2nd solo album. Made for my own label, and inspired by a new instrument, a Zum “Hybrid” model pedal steel, on this album I branched out a bit compared to Slider, exploring some new musical territory, I invited Jeffrey Wash to return and play fretless bass on a couple of tracks. I asked my dear friend, composer and pianist extraordinaire, Kent Darnielle to compose and accompany me on a couple of pieces. I was thrilled to be joined by ukulele virtuoso (I think of him as the Dalai Lama of uke), Jake Shimabukuro, rock legend David Immerglück on guitar, Latin percussionist maestro Karl Perazzo on congas, cello maestro Matt Brubeck, The Real Vocal String Quartet, bassist extraordinaire Paul Olguin, and tabla experts Salar Nader and John Loose.

Bruce Kaphan Quartet began when Thomas Dolby contacted me to see if I’d be interested in performing at a TED conference. I love to listen to and/or watch TED conference talks, so of course I said YES! It wasn’t solely up to Thomas to decide whether or not to invite me—I needed to prepare a video demo that would serve as an audition for “the committee." I wrote a piece for the demo, enlisted Jeffrey Wash to accompany me on fretless bass, and we shot a video. And the committee gave it a thumbs down. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained… One thing led to another and both Jeffrey and I wrote more music and chose a few covers (Birdland, Jessica, and What’s New). Joined by virtuoso pianists John R. Burr and Rich Kuhns, and virtuoso drummer, Jason Lewis, Bruce Kaphan Quartet is a journey into musical territory with roots in jazz, fusion, and new age. Apparently an acquired taste for most, I was absolutely graced to be accompanied by these fine musicians.

Pelican Dreams, the Soundtrack Album is a collection of music associated with Judy Irving’s film, Pelican Dreams. After watching her film “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” I was so impressed with her filmmaking that I contacted her and eventually sent her some music that I’d previously recorded, letting her know that I’d be honored to be considered for scoring any future projects she might have. She used a couple of tracks from Slider as “temp score” (music to be used temporarily as a placeholder by filmmakers to help in the editing of a film, generally meant to be replaced by a composer later in the process), and they stuck. I ended up scoring the whole film. Since making Pelican Dreams, I’ve been honored to work with Judy on a number of short films, and most recently another feature length film, Cold Refuge.

Back in the late 1970s/early 1980s, I joined a band called Bozon; "Cold Fusion" is the only remaining artifact from the band. This album is quite different than my solo albums. Though I wrote a few of the tracks on this album and I was a bona fide band member, to a very great extent, I was just the guitar player who doubled a tiny bit on pedal steel. This band was inspired by musicians like Frank Zappa, Weather Report, Pat Metheny, Brand X, and many other jazz and fusion artists. An acquired taste for many, I learned so much from my bandmates—Brian Schindele, Tim Vaughan, Drew Anderson, Menno Marringa, Chuck Maston, and Jeffrey Potter. We rehearsed like fiends for almost two years and had two gigs to show for it. This album is a compilation of 4-track recordings done in our rehearsal room, and two tracks that were recorded in professional studios. Caveat emptor: this music is nothing like my solo music but is a window into my past as primarily a guitarist
